That’s my two cents on the matter, but I’m not really satisfied with my own answer.

His support comes a lot from people who like to see a free speech advocate who thinks cancel culture isn’t a serious complaint. He also regularly ridicules the idea of cancel culture. That said, lots of his support seems to come from people who just really like to see Twitter dunks when he snarks at people who say things he doesn’t like, especially people on the right, people love it.

I frequently find Ken White to be informative on legal issues his long career as both a federal prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer has given him a lot of background on those topics, and he is one of the hosts of All The President’s Lawyers, a helpful podcast that breaks down the ongoing issues with Trump’s legal battles. He definitely focuses way more on criticizing Trump, but he’s also criticized people on the left quite a bit, including Biden for his support of harsh prison sentences. He also isn’t purely partisan, although Glenn Greenwald suggested in response to Katie that he is. My answer is that mainly, Ken White has built up a big following of advocates for the rights of criminal defendants and critics of police, and his snarky and often funny style on Twitter keeps him in the spotlight. In his tweet that prompted Katie’s question, he called Ken Bone a “narcissistic twat” for saying that his support for the Libertarian candidate has caused Trump supporters to mostly be nice to him, while Biden supporters are attacking him. He was an early critic of Michael Avenatti, and he really hates Donald Trump. He still focuses a lot on free speech, but also qualified immunity, and criminal law.

For those of you with good judgment who don’t browse Twitter, Popehat is a popular twitter account run mostly by Ken White, a LA-based lawyer who used to run a very popular legal blog by the same name mostly focused on free speech issues. Katie posted this on Twitter earlier, asking why people like Popehat. Accounts that have consistently low karma will be expunged. There will be a lower tolerance for rudeness or snark or low-value contributions if you are a relatively new account or someone who has never posted on this sub before.
